How Reflective Tape Brightness is Measured

There is a simple scientific ratio between the brightness of a surface and the distance at which it can be seen. According to 3M data, the brightness is measured by Ra units (cd/lux/m²) or candle power. White clothing is approximately 0.2 Ra while a reflective license plate's brightness level is approximately 50 Ra. And our reflective silver fabric tape is a whopping 10 times brighter at 500 Ra or candle power.

As this chart shows, with increasing brightness, sight distance also increases.  As you can see, reflective materials allow for optimal visibility during low light level conditions. However, not all reflective materials are the same, as there are reflective materials available that range from 65-600 candle power. As a general rule, the brighter the better. However, individual situations call for different materials and it is sometimes true that one's focus should be on the brightness of reflective tape which is suitable for the situation at hand.

Diamond Grade Reflective Tape and Sheeting (DG3)

Diamond Grade reflective tape returns an amazing 62% of the available it receives. Full cube prismatic lenses developed by 3M make this possible. Available in tape and sheets, Diamond Grade meets the specifications of ASTM Type XI standard. The technology put into practical use enhances the reflection of modern headlights in late-model automobiles and provides older drivers with greater brightness.

High Intensity Prismatic Reflective Tape (H-I-P)

High Intensity Prismatic (HIP) Reflective Tape and Sheeting  meets ASTM 4956-07 Type X ,  ASTM D4956-09 Type III and Type IV specifications. This is a very bright material suitable for highway signs, Due to its multiple bands of precisely engineered prismatic lenses, it can channel reflected light in such a way to take advantage of modern headlights and assist various drivers seated at different heights. This is of a non-metallized micro prismatic lens reflective construction. This material has found popular uses also in construction barricades as well as  traffic delineators such as barrels and cones. Highly reflective, and very durable High Intensity Prismatic reflective tape is extremely bright at night and in low light.

Reflective Tape Overview Information

Reflective safety tape (technically called retroreflectve or retro-reflective) reflects light that is shined on or towards it. Safety reflective tape is constructed using the technology combination of genuine micro prisms, small glass beads, polyester and metallic particals. Light bouncing off these materials, provide margins of safety in dark and dim environments. The advent of 3M's combination Fluorescent-Reflective tapes and sheeting to their Diamond Grade category has added a whole new dimension by actually multiplying light during the day and also reflecting it at night.

Our large selection of reflective tapes and custom made items come in a variety of colors and sizes to fit your unique need. By the way, reflective yellow tape is our most popular tape color.

We strive to help you improve your safety with our reflective tape products as well custom made reflective lettering, numbers, decals and pinstripes.

While use of reflective material enhances visibility, no reflective material can guarantee absolute visibility, particularly in adverse weather conditions. Performance will vary depending upon actual use, exposure conditions and maintenance. Buyers should personally test and own responsibility to see that their reflective material satisfies their individual requirements.
