Dooring' defined
   The term used when an unexpected opening of a vehicle door into the path of another vehicle (including a bicycle) results in a crash or suddenly forcing the other into oncoming traffic

Door Zone 

The 'door zone' is an area next to parked vehicles where a door can suddenly open into the path of an unwitting bike user, vehicle, pedestrian or jogger. Not only can this injure people through the initial impact with the vehicle door, a 'dooring' like this can also push people into the path of moving traffic. (A similar result can occur if someone is swerving to avoid a door that has suddenly opened).

It's the LAW:

“No person shall open the door of a motor vehicle on the side adjacent to moving traffic unless and until it is reasonably safe to do so and can be done without interfering with the movement of other traffic, nor shall any person leave a door open on the side of a vehicle adjacent to moving traffic for a period of time longer than necessary to load or unload passengers” from Revised Code of state of Washington

Dooring: Often the most common bike-motor vehicle collision in urban areas

As more people turn to bicycling for local travel, reported doorings have dramatically increased in many older cities where drivers or passengers exit into adjacent travel or bike lanes. Defining and measuring the incidence, prevalence or proportionality of doorings, crashes, injuries and fatalities is difficult and various (see Caveats note below).  Even so, several cities in North America report doorings (however variously defined or collected) among their top three causes of bicycle - vehicle collisions.
